Athletics Activities

Hi everyone, for the past few weeks we have been practicing for athletics, what we did in athletics was Long Jump, High Jump, Sprints, Shot Put, Discus & Relays. We are going to have athletics day tomorrow.

I tried the relays for the first time and it was fun and it is different than sprints because your whole team needs to be good and you can't win if it's just one person good in your team.

I enjoyed sprints the most because I got to race my friends and see who was the fastest.

I improved on the long jump and discus the most because in primary school I was quite bad at it.

I would like to do more sprints next time because I haven't been practicing my sprints much.

Hands on Fire

 Aim:

I want to safely light my hands on fire.

Activity: In pairs we need to come up with a list of 5 safety things that need to be considered when doing this experiment.

1. Fire extinguisher

2. Safety glasses

3. Tie up any long hair

4. Remove jewellery

5. Keep the fire away from flammable items

Instructions:

1. Collect your equipment.

2. Pour some water into the tray.

3. Squirt some detergent into the water.

4. Put on your safety glasses.

5. Tie up any long hair.

6. Take off any jewellery.

7. Wet your hands, wrists and arms.

8. Bubble the gas into the water.

9. Scoop the bubbles but not the water.

10. Hold the bubbles in front of your face with your arms locked.

What my senses say about this experiment:

I saw a big flame in my hands.

I felt a bit of burning on my hand but it wasn't too painful. I also felt a bit nervous when I was about to go.

I heard people react to the fire.

I smelled burnt toast on my hand after the fire was gone.

The States of Matter

Aim: To change the states of water from solid to liquid to gas

Hypothesis: I think that the ice will turn into water in 5 minutes.

Equipment:

1. Beaker

2. Ice

3. Thermometer

4. Bunsen Burner

Method:

1. Ice is placed in the beaker on the bench,. Record its temperature

2. Once the ice has thawed, the Bunsen burner is set up with the tripod, gauze mat, heatproof mat and beaker

3. The Bunsen burner is lit.

4. The thermometer is placed in the beaker of water.

5. The findings are recorded on the chart.

Counting the Beat

In Counting the Beat we learned there is different types of music like Rock, Pop & Country. Music is instruments and vocals combined together to make them sound good. We can hear music in our car when there is a radio or in a shop sometimes there is music.

Bunsen Burner

What are the two main types of flame?

Safety flame & blue flame

Which flame is hottest and why?

blue flame because the air hole is open

Which type of flame is used for heating? Blue flame because the safety flame creates soot

Which type of flame would be the most visible? Safety flame

Which type of flame would cause soot to form? Safety flame

Egg Drop Challenge

Hi everyone, in science Jaren Elias & I made an egg lander to protect the egg from breaking as we dropped it from the balcony. Our egg didn't break so that was good.

We used different materials like kebab sticks, popsicle sticks, paper, foam pads, rubber bands, string and tape.

I think the parachute helped because of air resistance, the air will get trapped under the parachute and there will be more air pushing up that is why it is slowed down. The foam pads were also a nice help to absorb the impact.

Here is a video of the egg drop.
